Texas: We bought a house

Yes, that’s right. We bought a house. Though we probably haven’t publicly said anything, we have looked in every area we’ve taken the RV. We looked for a deeded lot or a home with a long enough driveway for RV and the HOA rules that allowed 24/7 RV parking. As you may imagine, it is not easy to find the right combination.

We put in offer in, the offer was accepted, we did a home inspection, and closed on the house earlier this year.

The house

A long gravel driveway with a black Jeep Wrangler at the end of the gravel. A tall tree is to the right of the Jeep, and a house is behind the tree.

This is not what it looked like when we signed the papers and got the keys.

We needed to reinforce the driveway to make sure it could withstand the weight of the RV. What you see in the above photo is after the dirt and gravel folks had dumped and spread out the gravel. On the left of the photo, you can see the orangeish colored road base that goes in front of our storage shed.

As part of this job, they were also building up the dirt in the yard and removing a tree stump.

Yeah, that is a very large root system there.
Bye bye tree stump.

After the dirt was built up, they came back a week or so later to install grass sod.

You may wonder why we needed to build up the dirt in the yard.

The ditch/culvert

Well, one of the things that the previous homeowner did not disclose was that the culverts flood every time there’s a rainstorm. As I understand it, the capacity of the culvert system is not sufficient downstream from our house, so the water floods our yard. Sometimes the street as well.

Yes, that’s Bob capturing the flooding from the street behind the ditch.
This is what happens every time it rains, unless it’s a very short light rain.

We’ve had some nasty severe thunderstorms this spring, so the water has actually gone underneath the house skirting multiple times.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. We’ve been able to replace or spruce up a few things, like this window blind.

We never took a picture of the previous window treatment (aluminum blinds) because they were hideous. These are much better.

I’ll continue to share some of the stuff we’ve done in the house in future posts. We’ve done a lot of shopping at Lowe’s in the past few months.
