Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta – Special Shapes Rodeo

When we went on our month-long RV road trip in October 2017, one of our bucket list items was to attend the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. One of the two events we were able to attend was the Friday morning Special Shape Rodeo.

The day starts with a Dawn Patrol, where pilots take off in the dark and fly until it is light enough to see landing sites.

Then it started to get light enough, and the Dawn Patrol balloons could be seen against a blue sky.

Once the sun came up, we realized that we had been lucky enough to secure a spot close to where the Darth Vader and Yoda hot air balloons were being inflated and launched.

Once Darth Vader and Yoda were in the sky, it was time to turn our attention to other special shapes in the air.

I just couldn’t resist capturing some of the many balloons in the beautiful skies in groups.

One of the coolest balloons was one that never got off the ground – the Yamaha motorcycle hot air balloon. The way the balloon was inflated made it seem like it was popping a wheelie over the crowd.

We’re heading back in 2019 – and we’ve already got our Standard (South Lot) RV site booked for the entire event!
